VCOTHG started as a ski club affiliated with OTHG International which in turn started as a ski club formed by ex-members of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division who, as they aged, lost many of their former skiing partners to inactivity. Not wanting to give up skiing or not wanting to ski alone, they found kindred spirits among some senior Colorado skiers. The initial group went through a series of informal associations until OTHGI Incorporated over twenty-five years ago.

Today, the Ventura club’s hard corps of skiers is a minority as the social aspects have come to dominate our activities. Regardless, we have an annual mid-week ski trip to Mammoth Mountain. This "great value” event always includes non-skiers because there are numerous things to do in Mammoth Lakes, including nightly après ski parties, group dinner, snow shoeing, and lots of camaraderie. Also during ski season we sometimes sponsor another ski event organized by our Ski Chair. In addition to which there are informal trips and trips that are organized by other ski clubs to which we are invited.

We have members who gave up skiing twenty or more years ago renew their interest in the sport, to their great joy. We also have had older members try the sport for the first time by taking beginner ski lessons and developed enough skill to enjoy thereafter the exhilaration of being outdoors in Nature’s winter wonderland.
